Set in a single-screen puzzler environment, Rat Catcher for the Atari 5200 challenges players to navigate five distinct floors using a network of tubes. The objective revolves around capturing various targets, including mice, electric rats, flying tomatoes, and crocodiles. Movement between floors is managed through tubes on both the left and right sides, controlled by switches that determine the exit points. A notable feature is the radioactive liquid dispenser located on the top floor, which players can activate to eliminate enemies by directing the liquid through specific tubes. However, strategic caution is required as the liquid can also sweep away the necessary targets.

Enemies emerge from sewer pipes, signaled by flashing lights, allowing players to anticipate and counteract their movements. Additionally, each floor contains switches that control movable walls, enabling players to trap enemies and optimize their catching strategy. The game demands careful planning and timing to successfully gather at least five mice per level while avoiding nasty crocodiles. Developed by Ryan Whitmer, known as Phaser Cat, Rat Catcher draws inspiration from classics like Taito’s Zookeeper and the original Mario Bros.
