15. Briley Witch Chronicles

Commodore 64

We're all a bit ill on this Christmas episode as we look at Sarah Jane Avory's RGP for the Commodore 64. We talk about some off topic modern releases including Diablo 4, Children of Morta and Terra Nil. More on the retro-scene we talk about Pier Solar, Paprium and Water Melon studios and the recent Insane Pain for Megadrive! We also touch on Warcraft and Baldur's gate as we read our first emails!

This is a turn-based RPG for the Commodore 64, focused on exploration, puzzle-solving, and strategic combat. Players guide Briley and her cat through a variety of environments, interacting with NPCs and uncovering secrets to progress the story. Movement is grid-based, with players navigating towns, dungeons, and the overworld.

In typical RPG fashion combat is menu-driven, where players select actions like attacking, defending, or casting spells. Each character in the party contributes unique abilities, adding depth to the battles. Managing resources like health and mana is essential, and leveling up unlocks new spells and abilities to tackle increasingly harder enemies.

Not only your job is to control Briley and follow the story, but your party can get bigger and you get to control more characters! Each of them has unique roles and abilities, which can be customized and enhanced as the game progresses.

Exploration features environmental puzzles that challenge observation and problem-solving skills. Certain paths or areas may require specific items or abilities to access, encouraging players to revisit previously explored zones. Inventory management plays a significant role, as items found during exploration often serve dual purposes in combat and puzzle-solving.
