Developed over three years, this MS-DOS platformer offers a classic jump-and-shoot experience where players explore levels scrolling in four directions. The primary goal is to reach the star at the top, but boosting your high score by collecting coins, keys, and opening treasure chests adds depth to the gameplay. Hidden items and non-obvious paths encourage replayability, and while there’s a timer, it rarely becomes a pressing concern.
The game features a variety of monsters with unique behaviors, such as bats that swoop down when you approach. Gameplay mechanics are enriched with trampolines for higher jumps, moving lifts, and areas where you can swim instead of jumping. The graphics are large and nicely pixelated, giving a retro feel that complements the game’s design.
The developer built the engine and most of the tools from scratch, even designing the sprites in Photoshop before converting them for text mode graphics. Inspirations include classics like New Zealand Story, Rainbow Island, and Gods.
The game runs smoothly even on original hardware like the IBM 5150, with careful timing tied to the CPU’s internal clock to ensure consistent performance across different machines.
